On October 1st, DJ sensation Deadmau5 wowed the crowd at the Tabernacle with a amazing lighting show. Presented by Liquified and ATL Nightlife

“Deadmau5 in the Hua5!”

You may have spotted this over-sized mouse head wearing DJ, Deadmua5 on 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, 2010.

Don’t let the corky costume known as the “Mau5head” fool you- Born Joel Zimmerman, Deadmau5 remains among the most respected producers in the dance music genre, and his ascent to mainstream visibility is the result of a revered caliber of production, and a seemingly grueling touring schedule (so much so that the producer fell ill and canceled a string of dates recently).

Earlier this year at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, many of his colleagues weighed in why ‘mau5 is one of the genre’s biggest stars.

Joel is classically trained in music but ditched the piano keys for the computer keyboard.

Digging a little deeper you will find that Joel is not your typical progressive/electro house DJ from Toronto, Ontario.  When asked, he say, “he plays one on stage”.

During Joel’s performance on stage there are NO discs, NO jockey, NO DJing involved.  “It looks a lot like a DJ set up due to the equipment he has to use in the nightclub but Ableton is the backbone to his live performance.” Ableton is a hub for a wide variety of tools.  He’s gone as far as hacking the system to support OSC inside Ableton Live.

How does he play music then you might ask?

Interestingly enough, Joel has a customized 16 x 16 LED button matrix performance instrument. For DJs & producers it is a unique performance tool enabling them to perform using MIDI and load the instrument with samples to 'jam / improvise' within their set BPMs. He spends countless houses writing “python scripts” to use in his performance.

Who do you draw inspiration from?

His inspiration stems from one the great Canadian electronic musician and DJ, Richie Hawtin. His deep involvement in the development of Abelton inspired Joel to turn his passion for music into a giant “mau5head” performer.  Hawtin is said to be “solely responsible” for the MIDI implementation of Abelton Live 3.

But when it comes to music production as a separate entity- Deadmau5 is in a class of his own.

Joel stopped in at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia for what will forever be known as the “cataclysmic night in music”.

Fans swarmed the venue in masses decked out in fan made t-shirts, mouse ears, and some went as far as creating their own elaborate homemade “Mau5heads!

From start to finish, Joel’s performance was nothing more than “eargamsic” at epic portion paired with a mesmerizing lightshow and stage booth setup with built in LED imaging.

Since Deadmau5’s appearance on MTV and the mainstream exposure of the dance music genre, we are sure to see more house producers/DJs on the airwaves and on our local stages.
