One-on-One Interview

ATL Nightlife: Lets set the record straight; you ’re no “overnight success”.  You’ve paid your dues in the New York City Club Circuit (since 1992).  Take us back to the beginning, were did it start for you?

DJ Boris: I started at a club named “Tilt on Varick”, I was the resident there for 2 years and it was one of the most succesful parties back in the 90s. With that came a slew of residencies in the NYC, so I was fortunate!  You don't make it in this business by becoming a overnight success. You have to put in the time whether it's playing crappy hole in the wall gigs, playing for low fees, or sometimes no fees at all.

ATL Nightlife: A couple of years back during WMC, you played a 22-hours (10PM-8AM), non-stop at Nocturnal in Miami. What was going on in your mind?

DJ Boris: Yes! That was some party! All I kept saying was that I didn't want the party to end because the vibe and party itself were both fantastic! It went by so fast that I barely noticed. I played until I was done, and then it hit me!

ATL Nightlife: How do you make your track selections?

DJ Boris: I usually try to start off more housy and groovie and build it up as a "Journey" and eventually peak it with some harder stuff. Also depening on the hours I am playing, I have peaks and va lleys throughout my set, as well as going through all sorts of different genres.

ATL Nightlife: You’ve been traveling all over North America on your “Believe In the Music” Tour.  How has your tour been so far?

DJ Boris: It's been great! I have been to Miami, San Francisco, San Diego, and Chicago just to name a few, as well as South America, Las Vegas , West Palm, Washington DC, Boston,  and Rhode Island. And now of course, Atlanta.

ATL Nightlife: These days you call Pacha NYC your “home base,” can you tell us about your residency there?

DJ Boris: I have been a resident at Pacha for almost 4 years now, and I couldn't be happier being a part of such a great brand and club with a top notch sound and lighting system. Being in NY is home for me, I am able to not hold back on anything that I want to play.

ATL Nightlife: You’ve played at numerous conferences and festivals over the years, which event do you look forward to the most each year?

DJ Boris: I always look forward to our WMC (Winter Music Conference) events at the pool, as it has become a staple of the conference every year. This year we did close 7k people and it was insane! I also love all of the holiday weekends where I tour from city to city.

I am also looking forward to Electric Zoo which is a huge two day festival here in New York. I was asked to be a part of the main stage, as well the Groove Cruise, and Festival of Flores in Medellin, Colombia.

ATL Nightlife: With your busy tour dates, when do you find time in the production studio? Are there any rituals that you perform beforehand?

DJ Boris: I am in the studio from Tuesday until Friday. That's until I have to head out of town. No special rituals beforehand really, I just get my coffee in the AM and head in!

ATL Nightlife: You’re a big 80s music fan (Depeche Mode & Duran Duran), what tracks can we find on your iPod?

DJ Boris: I'm a huge 80s fan! I love the Soul 80s, from D- Train and Shalmar to of course Depeche Mode. I have a variety of different stuff from Today Soul, Hip-Hop and R&B, to 70s ,80s and 90s.

ATL Nightlife: How many times have you performed in Atlanta? How is this time different for you?

DJ Boris: This is my 5th time back. I have played in different venus in Atlanta, all being different. I'm looking forward to this one at Havana Club, as I've hear good things about the venue!

ATL Nightlife: What places do you like to visit in Atlanta?

DJ Boris: I haven't been to too many places because I have just been in and out, but perhaps this time that will be different!

ATL Nightlife: What advice can you give to aspiring local DJs?

DJ Boris: Work hard and develop your own sound. Go out and support as many DJs and promoters as possible. If people see you at their events, they may be prone to give you a shot at one of their future events. Always show support for others.
